The Leukemia & Lymphoma SocietyThe Leukemia & Lymphoma SocietyApr 24, 2025

“‘I have lost my hero, I have lost my friend, but for you, my darling, I would do it all again.’

I first learned about The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) through my friend Matt, a leukemia survivor and passionate fundraiser for the organization. His work inspired me to get involved.

When my wife, Lisa, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), I understood how crucial a support system is. Many people lack the resources and knowledge to navigate blood cancer, and LLS provides the guidance and roadmap needed to make everything more manageable. I’m honored to serve as a Board Trustee in the Michigan-Indiana Region and on the Executive Committee for LLS Light The Night in Southeast Michigan.

As Lisa’s caregiver, I provided love, care, and support through her daily treatments and hospital visits. Fortunately, we have good medical insurance and access to top-notch care, including clinical trials. We supported each other every step of the way.

My advice to other caregivers is to take care of yourself—physically and mentally. You need to be your best to care for your loved one.

Volunteering with LLS has allowed me to stay connected to Lisa and continue her legacy. It gives me peace knowing I’m helping others facing the same challenges. LLS’s integrity and commitment to doing the right things for the right reasons reflect the values Lisa and I have always tried to live by.

The greatest lesson I learned from caregiving is that life is fragile, and we need to live with purpose, bring joy to others, and cherish each moment. Volunteering keeps Lisa’s memory alive and helps me honor her daily.”

It is National Volunteer Week, and we are forever grateful for volunteers like Richard. He dedicates his time in honor of the memory of his beloved wife, who passed away. With loud gratitude this week and year, we wholeheartedly celebrate our volunteers’ compassion, generosity and kindnesses. Learn more about our volunteers 👉 https://bit.ly/4cPTgig

Together we can help make sure no one has to face lymphoma alone. 💜

During #NationalVolunteerMonth this April, we're shining a light on the dedicated volunteers who are getting us one step closer to a world without lymphoma.

Longtime Chicago Lymphoma Walk volunteer Rocio attended her first Lymphoma Walk in 2007 and immediately felt inspired by the powerful sense of community. She continues to walk in support every year and encourages others to join. 💜
